“.over the bushes you could feel the vineyard and see the canes:
that's the beauty of Canelli. It seems to be far away, in a
different country, and hills are not hills anymore, even the sky
is clearer, like those days when the sun shines while it's raining."
- Cesare Pavese
Via Alba in Canelli is still like that. Today, like in the past, you can feel the vineyards, and among lime-trees, hills are white grape-coloured. Today, like in the past, San Marco restaurant is there. At the time of Pavese, it was an "ostu", an old tavern with stabling, which name derived from a little church close to it. During St. Mark the Evangelist's Day, country women used to go to that church on a pilgrimage, in order to ask God to watch over the hatching of the "bigat", the silkworms they used to brought there in their bosom. Today, nor that little church or the silkworm cultivation exist anymore, but the San Marco restaurant is still there, like the "scent of moscato marc" that sometimes you can smell in the wind blowing through lime-trees. Nowadays, Mariuccia and Piercarlo work with dedication to keep the great food heritage of this territory alive, rediscovering forgotten foods and lovingly revisiting them when necessary. |
